Pictures of Collar Types

Confused by the collar type drop down menu? We apologize for that. There's a 20 character limit on Etsy to describe the item. Here's a description of each of the collar options:

Plastic Buckle Collar

This is the most popular option and is pictured in nearly all Caninedesign listings. It comes with either a black plastic quick release buckle or a pink plastic quick release buckle. Typically if the nylon is pink, the buckle will be pink. Black is the primary default buckle though.

Buckles can be plain or branded with the Caninedesign logo.

Metal Buckle Collar

The same as the regular buckle, just a nickel metal. This is still a quick release buckle, not a belt buckle with grommets in the collar. It does make the collar a little heavier, so maybe not a good choice for the smaller dogs.

Martingale Collar

No buckles on this collar. You slide it over your dog's neck by adjusting it wider, then tightening it. This is popular with many rescues since the collar is designed to tighten when the leash is taunt. It's not a good choice if you like to switch collars frequently, as it can be difficult to remove.

Chain Martingale Collar

Same as the martingale but replace the cinch piece with a chain. A lot of people like this since the chain makes a noise as the collar tightens. It helps in training. It also looks a little like a necklace :)

Hybrid Martingale Collar

This is a combination martingale and plastic buckle collar. You get all the benefits of the martingale, but it's much easier to take on and off. Rescues like this type of collar for reactive dogs because it minimizes the amount of time your hands are near the dog's mouth.

Hybrid Chain Collar

Same as the hybrid martingale collar above, except replace the martingale cinch with a chain.

Padded Buckle

The collar is lined with white Sherpa fleece. Great option if your dog has sensitive skin. Not a great option if your dog gets wet frequently.

Padded Leash Handle

Anyone who has bought this has really liked it. It's white Sherpa fleece on the inside of the leash handle. It really cushions your hand from the nylon. For an extra $5, it's worth it.

June's Featured Rescue

This month's featured rescue is Lu's Labs out of Alexandria, VA. They are a foster-based rescue that specializes in the saving of Labrador Retrievers and mixes.

For the entire month of June, Caninedesign will donate 10% of all sales to Lu's Labs. Collars and leashes run from $12 to $41 depending on what upgrades are chosen. For a basic buckle collar at $12, $1.20 will be donated to Lu's Labs. You get a quality collar at a low price, and your rescue gets a portion of the sale.

A single donation to the rescue will be made on July 1st.

Now is a great time to buy a 4th of July collar. Make sure to get your order in by June 25th to ensure adequate time for sewing and shipping.

Let's show some support for Lu's Labs!

Size Guide

Each collar at Caninedesign is custom made after you check out. You choose size, color, and style and get a collar that is perfect for your dog. However, that means we can't do returns or exchanges for wrong sizes.

This guide should help on how to accurately measure to make sure you get a great fit.
Caninedesign's default sizes are 11-14", 13-19", 15-22", and 18-26". That doesn't mean you HAVE to choose one of those ranges. You are more than welcome to type the actual neck size in the checkout notes, or send us an email with your measurement. We'll make a custom range around your dog's size.

How to Measure Your Dog
The best way to measure your dog's neck size is to use tailor's tape. Wrap it around the base of the neck where the collar sits. Adjust the tape to however tight (or loose) you want the collar. All Caninedesign collars are adjustable, so the measurement doesn't have to be exact.

There's no need to make adjustments for martingale collars or padded collars. Use the dog's actual neck size to order a collar.

If you don't have tailor's tape, you can use string, rope, thread, twine, or whatever else you have around the house. Mark the string, lay it flat, then measure with a ruler.

Measure the Current Collar
Another way to find your dog's neck size is to measure the current collar. This is easy with quick release buckle collars. Lay it flat and measure the length of the collar, not including the male prongs.

For martingale collars, while your dog is still wearing it, use chalk or pencil to mark where the strap adjuster is located. Take the collar off, then slide the strap adjuster back to the wearable position.
The inside circumference of the collar will be your dog's neck size. Measure the diameter and multiply by Pi. Round up to the nearest inch or half inch.

Buying Gifts
This question pops up quite a bit around the holidays, "I'm buying a collar as a gift. How do I know what my friend's dog's neck size is?" Unfortunately the only way to know is to measure. Even if you know the breed and approximate weight, neck sizes still vary greatly from dog to dog, even within the same litter. We recommend purchasing one of the pre-made collars, which are returnable, or buying a gift certificate.

Manufacturing and Shipping Times

Caninedesign ships to all United States and international locations. Cost is weight-based.
Customers can choose between USPS First Class or Priority Shipping. When the order ships, you will receive an email with the tracking information.

DELIVERY ESTIMATES

Manufacturing time for all orders regardless of size is 3-5 business days. Each item is made after the order is placed.

First Class - delivery in 1-3 business days in most cases for United States customers. Available on orders weighing less than 13oz.

Priority - delivery in 1-3 business days for United States customers. Available on all orders.

Please note if you select Priority shipping, it does not speed up manufacturing time.

Rush Shipping
Rush shipping is not available because all orders are handmade according to your specifications. This takes time, but you do get a quality collar. Please estimate 3-5 business BEFORE the order ships.

Return Policy

Returns
Refunds and exchanges are granted for any damage during shipping, or any defects in the quality of the product. Please send an emailed picture of the damaged item first.

Because each collar is custom made, we cannot accept returns for the wrong size, color, or type ordered.

If you are unhappy with your purchase, contact us within 30 days after receipt of item.

Cancellations
Orders may only be cancelled if work has not begun on the item. As soon as the materials are cut and sewing begins, the order can no longer be cancelled in full.

Pre-Made Collars
If you ordered a collar that was already made (aka not custom), those are returnable. If the collar is pre-made, it will say so in the listing. You will get a refund for the price of the collar, not shipping, when the item has been returned to Caninedesign. Contact us for a return mailing address.

Caninedesign features a different animal rescue each month. That rescue will receive 10% of all sales made during the month. We recognize the people that make these rescues work, and the tireless effort to make a difference in an animal's life. This is our way of saying thank you.
